Visit the Alcatraz Prison Museum
I've never actually make it onto the island to visit the museum. The tours usually sell out several days in advance, so catching it during one of those spur-of-the-moment weekend trips to San Francisco is rather tricky.
What I have done, though, is take the Bay Cruise Tour on several occasions. The boat passes very close to Alcatraz and they tell the full history of the prison.
